Desert Breath

With it’s completion in 1997, Desert Breath is a beautiful art installation that inspires and seriously takes my breath away.

The art installation was created, 17 years ago, by  D.A.ST. Arteam, the Desert Breath, is located in the Egyptian desert near Hurghada on the Red Sea coast and is visable on Google Earth.

According to the artists in the D.A.ST Arteam,  Danae Stratou, Alexandra Stratou, and Stella Constantinides, the project was created to experience the feeling of infinity with the help of the vast desert and the vastness of the ocean. Almost two decades later the Desert Breath is in slow disintegration, but has been used as an instrument for the passage of time.

It’s a place that unfortunetly I knew nothing about and I would have loved to visit it. Therefore it’s on my “visit while in Egypt”-list…

Egypt 2012 day 1

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Egypt 2012-2013 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I still haven’t been able to post from our trip to Egypt last Christmas. We had a lovely time and I took lots of pictures, but I still haven’t been through all the pictures but now I hope to be able to post some of our doings in Egypt.  I hope you’ll enjoy the post even though they are “slightly” late =)
More from our trip to Egypt 2012-2013.
December 21Th, 2012
The wait was only the beginning…
Due to a snow storm in Istanbul the plane we were getting on was late leaving Istanbul making it’s arrival in Stockholm almost 2 hours late. Therefor our departure was almost 2 and a half hours late. Hoping for some in flown time we held our fingers crossed to catch our connecting flight in Istanbul.
Do I have to explain that we didn’t make the flight? We landed at the same time as our flight to Istanbul was to depart. And no one from Turkish Airlines was anywhere to be found. So we ran to the security to find information about our flight but apparently no one knew anything. So after a lot of nothingness we joined the growing line at the transfer desk to know what the hell we’d be doing now. An hour later we had new tickets with a flight 12 hours later and a booking for a hotel in the city.
We just had to realize the good with the bad and instead of being bummed by missing my grandmothers birthday party in Egypt later on that evening (which sucked, don’t get me wrong) we stayed positive and had a bonus day in Istanbul.
At a Starbuck’s at the Airport we formed a friendship with a Swedish girl Fazee whom had the same predicament as we did and started to plan our sightseeing day in Istanbul. But first a trip on a shuttle buss into the city and a check-in at the Grand Yavuz Hotel.
A little pearl in the center of Istanbul, in the Fatih district, on a street with a steep slope and if you leaned far enough out of the window a glimpse of the beautiful Blue Mosque.
We joined up again and started walking towards the mosque… We strolled up some beautiful streets with buildings old and new and the contrasts of rich and poor side by side.
2012-12-21 Turkey 01The snowstorm that had delayed us in the first place had covered the city in a thin layer of snow and the temperature was creeping towards zero. But since Istanbul is surrounded by water both The Mediterranean and the Bosporus river the humidity was quite high and therefor it was quite cold.
2012-12-21 Turkey 02A city of true contrast, it was a wonderful experience to just walk through the streets soaking in the history and the atmosphere of one of the worlds oldest cities.
2012-12-21 Turkey 03 2012-12-21 Turkey 04 2012-12-21 Turkey 05 2012-12-21 Turkey 06 2012-12-21 Turkey 07We strolled towards The Blue Mosque and were amazed at it’s beauty.
2012-12-21 Turkey 08 2012-12-21 Turkey 09 2012-12-21 Turkey 10The crisp white marble against the beautiful blue roof. Outside the mosque men were washing themselves for Friday prayer, and it looked so incredibly cold. We entered through the outer gates of the mosque and into the beautiful courtyard and gazed upon the multiple domed Mosque with towers and layers everywhere. Such an amazing sight.
2012-12-21 Turkey 11 2012-12-21 Turkey 12Unfortunately for us the Friday prayer was just starting so we couldn’t enter the insides of the Mosque. Which was too bad, but it means we have something left to do next visit, because we decided early on that Istanbul was a city we wanted to visit soon.
We continued on towards the square outside the Mosque with an Obelisk and lots of beautiful buildings. We found a little café, Sultan Café where we could get warm.
Sultan Café has three floors and is really cozy. We made our way to the second floor and made our orders. Apple tea was high up on my list and it was really good. A sweet and sour taste of apple. Just right. And with it some sandwiches. A lunch that really was a big long laugh in it’s entirety but it probably wouldn’t be funny at all if retold. But isn’t that how it usually is?
2012-12-21 Turkey 13After lunch we continued through the city towards Hagia Sophia but found lots of beautiful spots along the way.
2012-12-21 Turkey 14 2012-12-21 Turkey 15 2012-12-21 Turkey 16 2012-12-21 Turkey 17 2012-12-21 Turkey 18Freezing our asses of we ventured into Hagia Sophia and reviled at it’s grandeur and the fact that an amazing church could also be “reused” as a Mosque and have a picture of Jesus and a symbol for Allah and Muhammed side by side. The serenity was breathtaking and we spent quite a while just walking around and breathed in the spirituality, the peacefulness and the beauty.
2012-12-21 Turkey 19 2012-12-21 Turkey 20 2012-12-21 Turkey 212012-12-21 Turkey 22 2012-12-21 Turkey 23 2012-12-21 Turkey 24 2012-12-21 Turkey 25 2012-12-21 Turkey 26 2012-12-21 Turkey 27 2012-12-21 Turkey 28We continued our sightseeing trip by stopping of at another café, Bodrum Café to warm ourselves. Before entering I’m not sure that we actually understood what a great place it would be. Four stories up the café had the view of the century, a panorama of Istanbul. Beautiful.
2012-12-21 Turkey 32Some apple tea and cheesecake later and when Wilderbeasts hands finally had thawed we made our way to the Grand Bazaar to do some shopping.
2012-12-21 Turkey 29 2012-12-21 Turkey 30 2012-12-21 Turkey 31Similar to Cairo’s Khan El Khalili Grand Bazaar is buzzing with sounds and people. Smells, lights and sounds take you back to an ancient time and it was a really cool place. The difference is that Gran Bazaar is indoors, which made it nice and warm. There were jewels, gold, pottery, textiles, spices, and lots, lots more and we could have probably walked around for hours but started to feel the adventures of the day and called it.
2012-12-21 Turkey 33 2012-12-21 Turkey 34 2012-12-21 Turkey 35We were back at the hotel around 17.30 and decided to meet up at 20.00 for dinner before checking-out and going to the airport. We spent the rest of the time resting up and sleeping a while. The several night before had contained little-to-no sleep, so we were getting really tired.
After packing up our hand luggage (we didn’t take out our luggage from the airport) we met up for dinner at hotel restaurant.
We were offered (no menu here) carrot salad, lentil soup, meat and veggies and a coconut pudding. A pretty sad dinner but all in all neither bad nor good.
Check out and such took a minute and then we waited for the shuttle buss that was late. And at this point we really didn’t want to miss our flight. But finally it arrived and we were whisked off to the airport.
At the airport we just breezed through everything and didn’t have to do any of the usual check-in stuff. Passed security and we made our way towards Starbuck’s and settled in for a while. Then at go-to-gate time we moved towards the gate and eventually to the plane.
After quite a bumpy start with annoying seat-changing-before-checking-if-everyones-omboard-fellow-passengers and a cabin crew that seemed to be straight out of the training program we finally got underway to Cairo…
Iftar
10 juli 2013
Idag var det första dagen av Ramadan. Och eftersom mamma fastar blev det en riktigt Iftar (betyder frukost, alltså frukost efter dagens fasta – fast i vårt fall blir det ju middag). Vi samlades hela familjen och Hansson som var på snabbvisit runt middagsbordet och kl 17.12 (i enlighet med Dubai-tid där mamma och pappa bor för tillfället) var det dags att bryta fastan. Och det är ju lite av en procedur eller egentligen så är det bara så att man äter lite annorlunda mat just under Ramadan.
Hos oss bryter man fastan med en fruktsoppa med aprikoser, dadlar och fikon. 20130715-175936.jpg
Sen blir det en anksoppa som pressar i citron. 20130715-175942.jpg
Till huvudrätt blev det en av mina egyptiska favoriter, batatis bel tamaten – vilket är potatis i tomatsås, med ris och stekta kyckling filéer med sallad. 20130715-175949.jpg
Och till efterrätt blev det Aátayif – en söt pannkaksliknande knyte som är fyllt med antigen nötter eller vaniljcustard och sedan friterad. När den är friterad så häller man över en sockerlag. Mycket sött och mycket gott. 20130715-175958.jpg
En riktig Iftar att börja första dagen av Ramadan. Och det var riktigt mysigt att få dela den med mamma i år. Det var länge sen sist =)
More from our trip to Egypt 2012-2013.
January 3 rd
The alarm rang early early on the 3 rd, and it was time to make our way to the airport. Mom and Dad drove us there but we said Goodbye to Wilderbeast at the apartment since he was going to be flying to Dubai with Mom and Dad, and spend about a week there before returing back home again. The lucky one! =) Anyways, we said our Goodbyes and drove through a quite Cairo to the airport. A heartfelt Goodbye to my Parents, when reaching the airport and then we passed though towards the check-in desks. We got great seats and hustled of towards the gates.
2013-04-08 Egypt day 14 01
We did have some time to kill and but were way to tired to do any shopping so instead we rested.
2013-04-08 Egypt day 14 02
We were given EXIT seats on both legs of our flight home. Which was brilliant!
2013-04-08 Egypt day 14 03
Turkish did deliver this time =) No delays and no snowstorms, like on the way down, so we made our flight to Stockholm with plenty of time to spare.
2013-04-08 Egypt day 14 04
And the leg room was even better when we boarded in Istanbul.
2013-04-08 Egypt day 14 05
Still night…
2013-04-08 Egypt day 14 06
And we landed a few minutes late, but got our bags relativly quickly and picked up our car and started our trip back home…
…through a gray Sweden…
2013-04-08 Egypt day 14 08
We were happy to be home, but did miss Cairo and all of the people there! This was a great trip, we had a great time and it was nice to see Cairo and also my Parents apartment by the Red Sea.  We’ll be coming back soon, I promise! Thanks for this time, Egypt – We LOVE You!!!
More from our trip to Egypt 2012-2013.
January 2 nd
Our last day in Egypt for this time and we were really happy that we’d had a great trip but also sad since we were going home. Andy and I both like Cairo and Egypt alot and miss our family and friends quite a bit. But that is the way the cookie crumbles for us and we’ll just have to be back soon again.
We woke up early and it was quite foggy in the morning. No sight of the pyramid from the balcony this morning. But isn’t the greenery lovely in Maadi?
2013-04-08 Egypt day 13 01
We all pilled into the car and drove to my Grandmothers house. She pretty much lives in, what I think is the most Egyptian of Cairo, on Misr-we-Sudan Street. A street were I’ve spent many hours strolling up and down in my youth together with my cousins. Across from her apartment is this mosque, I think it has  very details. And as you can see the weather changed dramatically and we had blue skies as far as the eye can see.
2013-04-08 Egypt day 13 02
We were going to eat breakfast together at my Grandmother and Uncle Mimmis house. But my aunt Maha and uncle Mostafa and my cousins Hady and Hadeer also came by to say good by and have a lovely breakfast together. My Grandmother is an amazing cook and had made lots of yummy dishes.
2013-04-08 Egypt day 13 03
Aged mish – a cheesemix (strong cheese that has aged in a jar with oil) that is served with tomatoes. Mish is usually made from Roumi cheese whish is a quite strong cheese and therefore becomes quite strong and the tomatoes help to lessen the heat. So good, I could live on this!
2013-04-08 Egypt day 13 04
My Grandmothers beautifully pickled olives and vegetables. Spicy, vinegary and crunchy. Lovely with everything. I was luck because my Grandmother let me know how she makes it and the recipe that she uses. I still haven’t tried to make them but I want to. They are delicious.
2013-04-08 Egypt day 13 05
Pickled Lift – turnip. This is one of my absolute favorite Egyptian foods. I love Lift!
2013-04-08 Egypt day 13 06
Homemade Taymeya – or sometimes called falafel in other countries in the region. But the Egyptian Taymeya is ground broad beens and then fried. So good, piping hot!
2013-04-08 Egypt day 13 07
White goats cheese – salty and really creamy.
2013-04-08 Egypt day 13 08
Roumi cheese – similar to a parmesan cheese. A big favorite!
2013-04-08 Egypt day 13 09
An Egyptian omelette.
2013-04-08 Egypt day 13 10
And lots of other good foods. An Egyptian breakfast is really a breakfast full of lots of different tastes and textures as well as sizes and everything is eaten with a lovely flat bread called Baladi. I’d eat Egyptian breakfast every day if I could, it’s the best breakfast I know.
Then it was time to say good bye to everyone and I was going to miss them terribly. They are all such wonderful people and I love being with them. I hope we’ll be back soon again, and that we won’t stay away for another 4 years.
We made our way back home to Maadi and made sure our packing was done as well as spent some last minute time in the sun on the balcony. We were going to meet up with my friends Maha and Mai later on in the afternoon so we took all the chances for sun that we could.
2013-04-08 Egypt day 13 11
We met up Maha and Mai as well as the kids Hana, Kenzie and Omar at Beano’s Cafe in Maadi, right by Road 9. It’s a large villa that has been converted to a cafe so i’ts like sitting in someones back garden. Lovely place and highly recommended!
2013-04-08 Egypt day 13 12
Lots of room to sit and different arrangements for the most variability. They also have a kids corner with swings and a slide to keep the kids occupied. And if bad weather or to hot outside one can sit inside in the AC.
2013-04-08 Egypt day 13 13
We ordered lots of different things and just had a great time talking and just enjoying each others company. Lots of reminising about Malaysia and Egypt as well as letting Andy in on all the bad stuff we have done in our youth =)
2013-04-08 Egypt day 13 14
The Vanilla Latté was beautifully smooth. Mmmm!
2013-04-08 Egypt day 13 15
A chicken wrap.
2013-04-08 Egypt day 13 16
After a few hours of Maha and Mai freezing and Andy and I enjoying the beautiful weather we walked back to the apartment and said our goodbyes to my best of friends. We really enjoy their company and had a great time together.
Time to pack the last things and make sure we were ready to go to the airport later on in the middle of the night. Cause we were taking out My Parents and little Brother for a last Thank You dinner at T.G.I Friday’s.
2013-04-08 Egypt day 13 17
We started out with a drink since we has some logistical issues, so I had a Mohijto with my Dad while waiting for Andy, Wilderbeast and Mom to arrive.
2013-04-08 Egypt day 13 18
We ordered lots of appitizers and shared. We were stuffed to the teeth after dinner, but it was all worth it =) Friday’s was a resturant athat we oftened visited when living in Malaysia, it was like a little piece of home in a far away place. And since it was kidfriendly My Parents really liked it too. We’d spend hours there on Sundays and it brings back really fond memories… Andy hadn’t been to Friday’s before so I really liked showing him what it was all about. We had some Jalapeno poppers…
2013-04-08 Egypt day 13 19
And some huge onion rings…
2013-04-08 Egypt day 13 20
As well as a nacho plate…
2013-04-08 Egypt day 13 21
And Wilderbeast who ADORES loaded potato skins, was in heaven!
2013-04-08 Egypt day 13 22
And some BBQ chicken wings!
2013-04-08 Egypt day 13 23
Yummy! And for mains some took burgers…
2013-04-08 Egypt day 13 24 2013-04-08 Egypt day 13 25
…Other Philli-cheese-steak sandwiches…
2013-04-08 Egypt day 13 26
And some Fajitas…
2013-04-08 Egypt day 13 27
And we spent a few hours just having a lovely time and it really was the best way to end a great vacation, just the 5 of us, enjoying each others company, wigging out and giggling our way through dinner!
2013-04-08 Egypt day 13 28
And after dinner we made our way back home to finish the last bits of the packing and sleep a couple of hours before it was time to go to the airport and travel back home…
January 1 St
Since we got in quite late we took a sleep in and just mozied around the apartment during the day. Nothing much, just chit chating with my parents and brother and hanging out. We also started packing since we’d be going home in a day…
2013-04-05 Egypt day 12 01
My mom made the most beautiful shrimps for lunch. They were so sweet and moist, the best shrimps I’ve ever had. My Mom is the most amazing cook!
2013-04-05 Egypt day 12 02
We went on just taking it easy at home and enjoyed the sunshine on the balcony. As the sun set over the pyramids we started to get read for the evenings outing.
2013-04-05 Egypt day 12 03 2013-04-05 Egypt day 12 04We pilled into the car and set of towards the Fifth Settlement to Moe and MiniCoopers new house. We’d, Andy, Wilderbeast and I, seen it already but my Parents hadn’t and we were to also meet my Aunt and uncle as well as my cousin Shimo there. It was a lovely visit with lots of yummy things to eat and lots of fun to have.
2013-04-05 Egypt day 12 05
After a few hours we said our goodbyes and made our way home through the night. And when we got home, we ordered a couple of Hardee´s burgers, a Jalapeno burger, for a lite night dinner. An Egyptian favorite for us all and just what we needed to cap of the night.
December 31Th
The last day of 2012, wow the year goes fast!
We started out today with lovely homemade Egyptian breakfast, foul, taymeya and roumi cheese. I love! =)
2013-04-05 Egypt day 11 01
And then Andy and I took another walk to road 9 for some last minute things.
2013-04-05 Egypt day 11 02
Then all of us pilled into the car and drove to my aunts house to see her and her husband. And luckily also my lovely cousin Rehab, her husband Ehab and their lovely boys. We had a lovely time there with lots of laughs and coffee. Perfectly lovely family time.
2013-04-05 Egypt day 11 04
We went back home and had beautiful grilled fish for lunch, and then just hung out until the evening when we were to meet up with Maha and Mai + families at Downtown and the Mam’s restaurant to celebrate New Years.
2013-04-05 Egypt day 11 03
At Mam’s the place was packed but we packed together and enjoyed our time with lots of yummy food, drinks and happy people. Lots of laughter and joking all night long.
